Supporting Student Wellness Over Winter Break

Winter break offers students a much-needed pause from the school routine, but it can also bring challenges, especially when it comes to mental health and emotional well-being. Shorter days, colder weather, and time away from school support systems can affect mood, motivation, and connection. That’s why the Bureau of Indian Education is encouraging students, families, and staff to take part in the 10-Day Winter Wellness Challenge.

The challenge includes simple, meaningful activities that promote balance in mind, body, and spirit. From practicing gratitude and journaling to connecting with culture and taking screen breaks, each day offers a small step toward wellness. These actions are designed to be accessible at home and can be done individually or as a family. They also align with the BIE’s commitment to providing a comprehensive education that supports students emotionally, physically, spiritually, and academically.

By encouraging students to stay grounded and connected during winter break, they can return to school more focused, rested, and ready to learn. Families and educators can support this effort by discussing the importance of self-care with students, modeling healthy habits, and making time for reflection and rest. Even small acts of kindness, movement, or cultural connection can make a big difference.

The BIE Behavioral Health and Wellness Program offers free and confidential behavioral health and wellness services. The 24/7 Call Line is accessible to all BIE staff and students by dialing 1-844-ASK-BHWP (1-844-275-2497). Selecting Option 1 connects the caller with a trained mental health professional who can provide immediate support.
